Christian's Feedback
Due to my experience in PV I got hired at Germany’s largest independent engineering company
What course did you study?
Bachelor of Engineering: Renewable Energy Technology
Master of Science: Energy Conversion & Management
Can you tell us about your journey from when you finished your internship?
After my internship I finished my Master degree in Germany. Due to my experience in PV I got hired at Germany’s largest independent engineering company for a master thesis about PV and electrical storage. Until today I stayed in this company.
Where are you at now in your career?
I’m consulting international ministries, banks, developers and EPC’s in the field of PV, Storage and PV-Hybrid projects. The largest PV plants I’m working with have more than 1 GWp and storage projects around 60 MWh which is very exciting. I’m responsible for all PV-Hybrid projects in my company which brings me to very interesting places all over the world. Due to the modular nature of PV I could use my knowledge from the internship also in the position I have now. As an expert on those topics I attended the Intersolar in 2015 and 2017 as key note speaker.
What skills and knowledge did you gain during your internship?
· Electrical design of grid-connected solar PV systems
· Mechanical design of PV module mounting structures
· Work flow of engineering department
· 3D design (former Google Sketch-up) of PV plants
· SMA Sunny Design
· Excel sheets for bill of materials of final PV system
· Communication and feedback with installers
· Warehouse management
· Site visits for design of
· PV market in Australia
What experiences during the internship have assisted in your future career?
· Detailed understanding of electrical and mechanical design of PV Plants
· Working with an international team
· 3D designs
Any other feedback about your internship experience?
The most important skill I gained was working with an international team in a commercial driven environment. I’m very happy to say that the colleagues have been my friends also after internship hours and I still have contact to them until today. I’m missing the Friday evening beers and hangouts with the colleagues. Unfortunately, this isn’t a tradition back home in Germany. I can strongly recommend any students to gather experience in the PV field and get to know the working environment of an international team where working doesn’t really feel like working.

What course did you study?
Mechanical Engineering / Industrial design
Have you been employed in the Environmental Engineering industry since completing your internship?
I’m working part-time as an overseas engineer which I like a lot. Other than that, no. Not that I don’t want to, but I just haven’t had the chance yet.
What skills and knowledge did you gain during your internship?
I obviously gained a lot of experience in environmental engineering and the solar industry. I got to learn how solar installations actually work and how they are designed. Next to that I learned to use new software programs and overall computer skills. And general experience on how to work and communicate within a professional company and also with clients and installers. My English speaking, writing and understanding improved a lot during the internship in which I also saw a lot of different cultures as the company is quite multicultural
What experiences during the internship have assisted in your future career?
General knowledge about how to operate within a company, communication, computer skills etc. Looking back I can say I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved in that time and the internship made me a lot more self-confident. Difficult decisions are made easier.
